FIRST GRADE NEWS
February 12 – February 16
Today is beautiful, warm (above 10) Sunday afternoon! I
think the groundhog made a great prediction for an
early spring. I hope the rest of the week does not
contain the snow that is being reported as possible
accumulation.
RELIGION - We will complete
Chapter 12, "Come, Follow Jesus", today. I will send it
home on Tuesday with the test on Friday, February 16.
Our new chapter will be "We Celebrate At Mass. This
chapter helps us to understand that the church family
gathers for Mass to thank God and to praise Him.
READING - Our new story is
"Yasmin's Duck". In this story Yasmin discovers the
value and joy of teaching as she tells her friends what
she has learned about ducks.
This week we will study about words with long o and
silent e and review words with long a and long i with
silent e.
The children will review cause-and -effect relationship
in a story. We will also review inflectional ending
-ed.
SPELLING - Long o with silent e
We will now have eleven spelling words

Our Spelling test will be this Friday,
February 16.
PHONICS - This week we will
study words with long o and silent e.
MATH - Our new chapter is
"Place Value to 100". This is a very long chapter but I
think it will move quickly because of their daily work
with calendar activities.
SCIENCE - This week we begin
Unit C - The Sky and Weather. In our first
lesson we will recognize that the sun provides the
Earth with light and heat. Hopefully we will have some
sun this week so we can use thermometers to show areas
that the sun warms.

REMINDERS
1. Mass Wednesday at 8:30.
2. Student Council will sponsor a Red & White
Day on Wednesday, February 14. Please send $1.00 to
wear red, white or pink on Valentine's Day.
3. Please remember to send Valentine's to school on
Wednesday.
4. I am sending home the February and March book order
forms. I know we just finished the book fair which many
of you supported. I will still send in an order to
receive my bonus values available to teachers. If you
would like to order that would be fine but please do
not feel that you need to buy books. Thank you. Orders
are due on Friday, February 19.
