WELCOME TO THIRD GRADE

I would like to welcome you and your child to third grade. My name is Mrs. Kathy Burshears, and I have been teaching at St. Joseph since 1990. I have previously taught preschool, first, second and third grades, which gives me a well rounded background in teaching young children. I am looking forward to spending the third grade year with your children and being part of the many new learning experiences that they will encounter. What an exciting year we are going to have!

CLASSROOM GOALS

I would like our third grade classroom to be an environment in which each child feels that he/she is an important member. I hope to make each child feel accepted and confident enough to ask questions and take part in classroom discussions and activities.

Together, we will learn more about being members of God’s family and experience many new academic challenges. I am eager to share my excitement for learning with your children.

SERVICE HOURS

Third graders are required to perform ten service hours during the school year. It is broken down into two hours per quarter. You will receive a service form to fill out at the end of each quarter.

BOOK-IT

The Book-It program will begin in October and run through March. Third graders are required to read for Book-It and have their parents verify the books read by signing a listing of those books. Book-It is a terrific incentive program sponsored by Pizza Hut. The children receive a certificate for a free personal pan pizza each month upon turning in their verification slip. Participation is mandatory because I feel that independent reading is a corner stone of academic success.

STAR OF THE WEEK

Each child will have a turn to be the Star of the Week. The Star is selected by drawing a name out of a bag. Remember, someone has to be first and someone has to be last! When your child’s name is drawn, he/she will be given a poster to fill in, and a schedule of events for their special week.
